Chapter 2
Mac
âHey, Mac, we got another problem.â
Mitchell MacAllan squeezed the bridge of his nose between his thumb and forefinger, warding off an impending headache. The late-afternoon winter sun shining in his eyes wasnât helping.
He wouldnât be home until after dinner for the fifth night in a row. He blew out a sharp breath, watching it condense in the air in front of him. He might not know if any of them would still have a job tomorrow, but today, at least, he had work to tend to.
âWhatâs up?â He moved toward Bobby.
âLooks like the pump burned out again.â The mechanic sounded almost as tired as Mac felt.
âShit.â Mac drew out the vowel until it sounded like âshe-itâ and growled with frustration. âDuke been messing with the valves again?â
Bobby shrugged. âNo way to tell for sure. Anyway, I didnât want to touch it until you got some photos.â
Photos were about the only thing his phone was good for out here at the Rittman B well site. Duke Rittman had refused to allow cell towers on any of the vast number of acres he owned, no matter how much the phone companies offered for the lease.
He had refused to allow drilling on his ranch, too, until he had discovered that he didnât actually own the mineral rights to his land and the courts had forced him to allow Aerio Oil and Gas onto the property to drill.
The site had been nothing but trouble ever since.
Mac couldnât prove it, but he was certain that Duke took every possible chance to slow them down.
One look at the told Mac everything he needed to know. âThatâs a two- or three-day job. Letâs hold off until after the meeting tomorrow.â
Bobbyâs headshake held all the anxiety Mac had been shoving down for the last three weeks, ever since he found out that Gavin Greaves, the owner of Aerio, had died unexpectedly.
Bobby was anxious that he might not keep his job.
For Mac, the realization that Gavinâs niece Clara had inherited the company was far worse.
Clara Greaves was his new boss.
And tomorrow, he was going to have to give her a report on the state of the company. He needed all the information he could gather. âYou head on out to the next site, Bobby. Give me a call when youâre done. In fact, update me on all the sites you visit today. Iâm going into town, get some things done at the office.â
âYou got it.â
He had poured his entire professional life into this company. With one wave of her handâwell, a stroke of a pen, anywayâshe could take away everything he cared about.
Again.
He wasnât going to let that happen. Not this time.
This time, he would not cave to what Gavin Greaves wanted. He would convince her to keep the company running. He would find the right words, the right argumentâa way to keep her from destroying everything he had built.
Mac squared his shoulders and resettled his battered cowboy hat on his head.
This time, everything would be very different.
